The employer must provide, where reasonably
practicable, appropriate equipment for lifting, lowering, handling or
transporting heavy or awkward loads. The employer must ensure that workers use
the equipment provided. (Occupational Health and Safety Code, 208)
If the equipment provided is not practicable for a
circumstance, the employer must take all practicable means to adapt the load to
facilitate handling and otherwise minimize the manual handling required.
(Occupational Health and Safety Code, 209)
Before a worker manually lifts, handles or transports
a load that could injure the worker, the employer must perform a hazard
assessment that considers the weight, size, shape, number of times the load
will be moved and the manner in which the load will be moved. (Occupational
Health and Safety Code, 210)
If a worker reports symptoms of a musculoskeletal
injury, the employer must review the activities of that worker and workers
doing similar tasks to identify work-related causes of the symptoms and take
corrective measures to avoid further injuries. (Occupational Health and Safety
Code, 211)
