QUALIFICATIONS

A worker who installs, alters or maintains electrical equipment must be qualified as required by the Canadian Electrical Safety Code.

ELECTRICAL TESTING EQUIPMENT

Electrical testing equipment must comply with CSA C22.2 No. 160-M1985 Voltage and Polarity Testers, CSA CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.231 Series-M89 Safety Requirements for Electrical and Electronic Measuring and Test Equipment or other Standard. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 296/97, 19.8)

WORK ON ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

Electrical equipment must be completely disconnected and locked before starting work. If disconnection is not possible, qualified and authorized workers must perform the work according to written safe work procedures.

No work on energized lighting systems with a voltage of greater than 250 volts to ground is permitted without written permission of the board. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 296/97, 19.10)

UNINSULATED ENERGIZED PARTS

Uninsulated energized parts must be guarded by approved cabinets, enclosures, or be enclosed in a suitable room with access to authorized persons only.

An electrical room must be conspicuously marked and entry restricted.

If uninsulated electrical parts are not guarded with cabinets, provide suitable barriers or covers if there are workers unfamiliar with the hazard within one metre. Acquaint the worker with the hazard and ensure that written work procedures are followed. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 296/97, 19.10 – 19.12)

CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Circuit breakers and controls must be marked to indicate the equipment they control. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 296/97, 19.13)

GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTERS

When used in a wet or damp location, portable electrical equipment, including temporary lighting, must be protected by an approved ground fault circuit interrupter of the class A type installed at the receptacle or on the circuit at the panel, unless another acceptable means of protection is provided. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 296/97, 19.15)
