AISLES

Every exit must have an aisle that is at least 1.1 metres wide. There must always be a choice of two directions to exit. A secondary aisle must be at least 0.9m wide and less than 15m long. (Manitoba Fire Code, 2.7)

 

DOORS

The main inside/outside doors must open outwards. No door that leads to an exit may be locked at any time such that it bars exit in event of fire. There must be at least two approved exits for emergency evacuation. Any area of the workplace vulnerable to having the exit blocked by fire must have its own exit. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 26 - 27)

 

EMERGENCY LIGHTING

Emergency lighting must be provided according to the National Building Code and maintained in operating condition. (Manitoba Fire Code, 2.7.3)

 

Self-contained units must be inspected or tested monthly for proper function, and tested annually for duration. (Manitoba Fire Code, 6.4)

 

EXITS

If the facility is more than one storey, and there is no sprinkler or fireproof stairway, there must be one outside stairway-type fire escape. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 30)

 

Openings in fire separations must have closures conforming to the National Building Code. Doors in fire separations must be checked every 24 hours to ensure they are closed, and checked for operation at least monthly. Closures in fire separations must not be blocked. (Manitoba Fire Code, 2.2.2)

FLOOR OPENINGS

An opening in a floor or wall must be securely protected. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 14)

 

FLOORS

A worker must not be allowed to enter an area that is unable to bear his or her weight. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 17)

 

Floors/platforms/stairs/aisles must be kept in good repair, free of fire and tripping hazards, and slippery surfaces. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 23)

 

HOUSEKEEPING

Waste, and scrap materials or parts must be disposed of before a hazard accumulates. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 24)

 

ILLUMINATION

Illumination must be sufficient to ensure the safety of workers. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 20)

 

There must be a window capable of being opened in at least one external wall of every room. Without written permission of minister, no room devoid of all natural light may be used except for storage. Where not practicable to install windows, artificial light of power and intensity sufficient to minister must be provided. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 3)

 

WORK AREA

An occupied room must have at least 50 square feet of free floor space, and 400 cubic feet of air space per worker. (Workplace Safety Regulation 108/88R, 4)
