DEFINITIONS

A contractor is a person who undertakes work at a project site. A project site is any place where construction is carried out. Construction means repair, alteration, painting, moving, equipment installation and alteration.

 

A sub-contractor is a person who undertakes part of the work at a project site. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 1)

 

DIVISION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The employer must take every precaution reasonable to ensure the health and safety of his or her employees.

 

Every contractor and sub-contractor must take every precaution reasonable to ensure the health and safety of any person at the place of employment. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 9 - 10)
