CHEMICAL STORAGE AND HANDLING

GENERAL

The employer must conduct an on-going review of all hazardous chemical substances used at the workplace and substitute a safe or less hazardous substance whenever possible.

 

The employer must take all practicable measures to ensure that workers are not exposed to hazardous levels of chemical substances in the workplace. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 25)

 

CONTAINERS

A hazardous chemical must be contained in a suitable container clearly labeled to identify the substance, the hazards associated with its use, the workplace uses for which it is intended, and protective measures to be taken by workers during and after its use. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 296/97, 25)

 

EMERGENCY EYEWASH/SHOWERS

Where workers may be exposed to contact with chemicals harmful to the skin, facilities must be available to clean contaminated areas.

 

Where corrosive chemicals are used, emergency showers, eyewash facilities or other effective means of treatment must be readily available. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 26)

 

FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS

In areas where flammable liquids are used, ignition sources must be adequately controlled. The concentration of flammable vapours in the work area must be maintained below the lower explosive limit of the substance involved. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 48)

 

Dispensing

Containers used to carry, transfer and store flammable liquids must be electrically grounded or bonded while their contents are transferred from one container to another. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 49)

 

Manual cleaning

Flammable solvents with a flash point below 37.78oC shall not be used for manual cleaning. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 48)

 

TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS (TDG)

Employees who ship and receive dangerous goods must have TDG training and must carry their TDG training certificate at all times. (Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulation, 6.5 – 6.8)
