Compressed air must not be used to clean clothes, machinery, work benches or floors. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 34)
Doors must not open directly on stairways but must open onto floors having a width in excess of the swing of the doors.
Transparent glass doors and panels must be constructed of laminated, tempered or wired safety glass. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 33)
Emergency exits must be designed and marked to provide quick and unimpeded exit. Periodic emergency drills must be held to ensure workers awareness of the exits. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 32)
If a work process results in liquid collecting on the floor, floor drains or other means to control the hazard must be provided.
Floors, platforms, ramps, stairs and walkways available for use by workers must be maintained in a state of good repair and kept free of slipping and tripping hazards. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 18, 8)
When a stairway ends close to dangerous traffic or other hazards, detour guardrails must be installed.
Guardrails must be installed where an open-sided floor or walkway is more than 1.22 metres above floor level.
Guardrails must be of substantial construction. The vertical posts must not be more than 2.44 metres apart, the top rail must not be more than 1.07 metres above the floor and there must be an intermediate rail between the top rail and the floor. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 38)
Handrails must be provided on the open side of stairs that have more than four risers, on one side if the stairs are closed and less than 1.12 metres wide, and on both sides if the stairs are closed and more than 1.12 metres wide. The handrail must be between 91.44 and 1.07 metres above the tread. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 37)
The employer must ensure that the workplace is kept as clean as possible. Clean means any accumulation of dirt and garbage on floors, working surfaces, stairs and passages is removed daily, floors are cleaned weekly, all inside walls and ceilings are suitably finished and maintained in a reasonable state of repair, and floors, stairs and walkways must be kept free from tripping or slipping hazards. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 8)
The employer must provide suitable lighting in every part of the workplace and not less than the standards set by the American National Standards Institute Illuminating Engineering Society, RP7-1979. The brightness ratio, reflectance and glare must be controlled. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 12)
Toeboards must be provided around all floor openings and permanent walkways more than 1.83 metres in height. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 40)
There must be a safe way for a worker to access the work area. Pedestrian aisles must be defined by floor markings. The work area must be arranged to allow safe movement of people, equipment and materials. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 32)
