GENERAL

A worker who is handling acids, caustics, and other harmful substances must wear personal protective equipment.

 

PROVISION OF PPE

The employer must provide and maintain the necessary equipment, systems and tools that are safe and without risk to the health of the workers. (Occupational Health and Safety Act, 5)

 

TRAINING

The employer must provide the information, instruction, training and supervision that are necessary to ensure the health, safety and welfare of his or her workers.

 

The employer must ensure that workers are given operating instruction in the use of devices and equipment provided for their protection. (Occupational Health and Safety Act, 5)

 

A worker who may be required to use respiratory protective equipment must be trained in the use of the equipment. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 57)

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Worker

Workers who are required to use PPE must use the equipment in accordance with instruction and training provided. (Occupational Health and Safety Act, 7)

 

EYE PROTECTION

A worker must wear eye protection suitable for the hazard and in accordance with CAN/CSA Z94.3-92 Industrial Eye and Face Protectors. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 56)

 

BODY/SKIN PROTECTION

A worker who is exposed to the hazard of puncture, abrasion, or irritation to the hands or arms must wear gloves or other personal protective equipment to prevent injury. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 54)

 

FOOT PROTECTION

Where there is a danger of injury to the feet from falling or moving objects, burning, cutting or like hazards, workers must wear substantial shoes or boots made of leather or other firm material.

 

Shoes or boots must have safety toes where there is a hazard of crushing. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 52)

 

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

During temporary or emergency conditions, a worker who is required to work in an area where there is a danger to health from harmful concentrations of gases or vapours must wear respiratory protective equipment.

 

Workers must be clean-shaven where the respirator seals with the face.

 

In a work area when danger from toxic or corrosive gases exists, a worker entering the area must wear personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazard. Access points to the area must have signs displayed warning that respiratory equipment is required. The signs must name the gas present and prohibit untrained workers from entering the area. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1165/96, 57)
