QUALIFICATIONS

Anyone who works on an electrical installation must be a competent person.  (Occupational Safety General Regulations 44/99, 122)

WORK ON ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

The employer must ensure that an electrical installation is designed, installed, maintained and repaired in accordance with CSA C22.1-98 Canadian Electrical Code Part 1. (Occupational Safety General Regulations 44/99, 120)

Provide the appropriate PPE to anyone who works on an energized electrical installation. (Occupational Safety General Regulations 44/99, 123)

An employer shall ensure that no work is performed on an energized electrical installation rated at greater than 750 v phase to phase unless another competent person accompanies the competent person performing the work.

If PPE and normal work procedures are inadequate to control the risk of exposure to an electrical hazard during work on an energized electrical installation due to an unusual factor in the nature of the work, such as the location or condition of the workplace, a competent person not actively engaged in the work shall be designated as a safety watcher to observe a person who is working on or near an energized electrical installation (Occupational Safety General Regulations 44/99, 125)

UNINSULATED ENERGIZED PARTS

When a person is required to work on an energized electrical installation, the employer must provide all protective equipment and devices required to work safely and the worker must wear them. (Occupational Safety General Regulations 44/99, 123)

GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTERS

If there’s a risk of electrical shock in a confined space, an employer shall ensure that electrical equipment taken into the confined space is equipped with a ground fault circuit interrupter of the Class A type that complies with CSA standard C22.1-98, Canadian Electrical Code Part 1 (18th edition), Safety Standard for Electrical Installations, and that is tested before each use. (Occupational Safety General Regulations 44/99, 136)
