CHEMICAL STORAGE AND HANDLING

 

Regulations contain specific handling and storage requirements for chemicals depending upon their hazards.

COMPRESSED GAS

The cylinders, piping and fittings of compressed and liquified gas systems must be so located or guarded as to protect them from physical damage. 

 

No person shall allow sparks or flames to come in contact with cylinders, regulators or hoses of compressed gas systems, and charged gas cylinders shall be protected from a source of heat in excess of 55°C (131°F). (General Safety Regulations 1990, 155 - 156)

 

Compressed gas cylinders must not be hoisted by slings, dropped or subjected to impact and must be secured against falling during storage, transportation and use. 

 

Cylinder valves must be closed when the work is finished and when cylinders are empty, and valve protection covers must be kept in position when the cylinders are not connected for use. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 159 - 160)

 

EMERGENCY EYEWASH

The employer must maintain and immediately provide eyebaths, showers or other means of flushing the eyes of a worker whose eyes have come into contact with a substance potentially injurious to the eyes. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 50)

 

FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS

Dispensing

Flammable liquids must be dispensed in a storage room or, if in a work area, subject to the following conditions: separated from ignition sources by a wall or 6 metres of space, in an area where absorbent materials are available for clean-up of small spills, and where ventilation is provided. (National Fire Code, 4.2.8.3)

 

Storage

600 litres of flammable and combustible liquids may be stored outside of storage rooms or storage cabinets in closed containers, of which 100 litres can be highly flammable liquid. (National Fire Code, 4.2.8.2)

 

Each storage cabinet may hold 500 litres of flammable and combustible liquids, of which 250 litres can be highly flammable liquid. Three cabinets may be located together, groups of cabinets must be at least 30 meters apart. (National Fire Code, 4.2.10.2 - 3)

 

In a storage room with a two-hour fire separation, up to 10,000 litres of flammable and combustible liquids may be stored. In a storage room with a one-hour fire separation, up to 1,500 litres of flammable and combustible liquids may be stored. (National Fire Code, 4.2.9.1)

 

TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS (TDG)

Employees who ship and receive dangerous goods must have TDG training and must carry their TDG training certificate at all times. (Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulation, 3)
