HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM

Where there are more than 10 workers at a workplace, the employer must initiate an accident prevention program. Where there is more than one employer at a workplace, each employer is responsible for the accident prevention program for his or her employees. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 3 - 5)

 

Where there are fewer than 10 workers at a workplace, the employer must arrange for discussion with the employees of accident prevention matters at least once every six months and shall record the times of those discussions. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 8)

 

The employer must maintain records and statistics, including inspections and accident investigations, sufficient to indicate the effectiveness of the accident prevention program. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 3)

 

WORKPLACE INSPECTIONS

The employer must conduct regular inspections of structures and places of employment and review work practices at intervals that will ensure that safe working conditions are maintained. Any condition that constitutes a hazard to workers must be corrected and no person other than those workers necessary to correct the condition may be exposed to the hazard. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 3)

 

JOINT HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE (JHSC)

The Chief Safety Officer may direct that a joint work site health and safety committee be established at any work site. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 7)

 

The employer must organize an accident prevention committee. The accident prevention committee will assist the employer in creating a safe work environment and recommend to the employer actions directed at improving the effectiveness of the accident prevention program. (General Safety Regulations 1990, 3, 7)
