AIR EMISSIONS (OUTSIDE)

The province is generally responsible for regulating air emissions to the outside environment.

Does your facility have a stack or any outside venting of process emissions? For example, is there a local exhaust system that vents directly outside? If the answer is yes, air emissions regulations may affect your business.

You cannot discharge or emit any contaminant out of your facility into the air (natural environment) without having a permit. The permit in Ontario is called a certificate of approval – air (CofA). In order to receive a CofA, you must prepare and submit an application to the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MOEE). The ministry will issue you the permit, indicating what you’re allowed to emit. You must keep the CofA at your facility, and notify the MOEE any time there is a change to the quantity or type of contaminants that are emitted from your facility.
