CLEANING WITH COMPRESSED AIR

Never use a compressed air hose to blow dust when it could endanger a worker, or to blow dust from clothing except where there is a pressure-regulating device in place. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 66)

 

DOORS

Any door that leads to a hazardous or restricted area, and that could be mistaken for an exit, must be marked with a warning sign. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 16)

 

EMERGENCY LIGHTING

Emergency lighting must comply with the Building Code, section 3.2.7

 

EXITS

All exits must comply with the Ontario Building Code (3.3 – 3.4) (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 120)

 

Check fire doors as often as necessary to ensure they are closed. (Ontario Fire Code, 2.2.3.5)

 

Fire doors must be inspected monthly. (Ontario Fire Code, 2.2.3.4)

 

FLOOR OPENINGS

Provide guardrails around all uncovered openings in the floor. Where a cover is used over a floor opening, the cover must be secured in place and constructed to meet the structural requirements for loads of floors in building code. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 13 - 15)

 

FLOORS

Keep all surfaces used by any worker, free of obstructions, hazards, refuse, snow or ice. Do not use any coating or protective material on floors that could cause them to be slippery. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 11)

 

GUARDRAILS

Provide guardrails around uncovered openings in the floor and around the open side of raised floor (such as a raised floor, or a platform around a machine.

 

The top rail on the guardrail must be 91-107 cm above the floor surface and there must be a mid-rail. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 13 - 14)

 

ILLUMINATION

Provide artificial lighting where natural lighting only could be a safety hazard. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 21)

 

LADDERS

The stairs on a fixed walkway must be at least 55cm wide.

 

Fixed ladders must be vertical and must have the following:

·       Rest platforms at least every 9 meters

·       Side rails

·       Rungs that are at least 15cm from the wall and spaced at regular intervals.

 

Where workers must access equipment that is above floor level, there must be a stair or access ladder. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 17 - 19)

 

Portable ladders must meet the following requirements:

·       Be free of broken or loose steps and railings

·       Have non-slip feet

·       Be placed on firm footing

·       Be held in place if longer than 6meters

·       Be secured if the inclined horizontal distance is less than 1/4 or more than 1/3 the length of the ladder

(Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 73)

 

LUNCHROOMS

Food, drinks or tobacco may not be consumed or stored in areas where poisonous substances are found. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 131)

 

A lunchroom or cafeteria must be provided where there are more than 35 workers. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 136)

 

TOEBOARDS

Where there is a risk that tools or other objects could fall on a worker below, the raised floor or platform must have a toe-board that is at least 125mm high. (Industrial Establishments Regulation 851/90, 14)
