TANKS

Tanks used for storing non-flammable hazardous liquids must be labeled to identify the contents and the nature of the hazard, be located above ground or floor level, supported so leaks are noticeable, and surrounded by a pit of sufficient size to hold the entire contents of the largest tank in case of rupture. (Occupational Health and Safety Act General Regulations EC180/87, 43.9)

Tanks for storing corrosive or caustic liquids must be provided with a permanently open vent pipe, not less than 2 inches in diameter, at the highest point in the tank and a drain connection at the lowest point discharging into a safe place. The filling connection must be at the top and the discharge pipe 6 inches above the bottom. (Occupational Health and Safety Act General Regulations EC180/87, 43.15 – 43.16)

CONTAINERS

Drums containing acids must be stored in cool places with the bung up. They must be carefully opened sufficiently to relieve any internal pressure each time the drum has been moved or weekly.

Empty barrels or drums that have contained acids or other non-flammable liquids and hazardous liquids, if to be re-used, must be promptly cleaned and stored apart from other containers. (Occupational Health and Safety Act General Regulations EC180/87, 43.19 – 43.22)

EMERGENCY EYEWASH / SHOWERS

Where caustic or acids are stored, handled or used, emergency deluge showers and eyewash stations must be provided. (Occupational Health and Safety Act General Regulations EC180/87, 43.31)

FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS

Storage rooms for flammable liquids must be constructed of fire-resistant materials. The floor must be waterproof with the waterproofing extending up the walls for at least 3 inches, and the barrels or drums of flammable liquids must be placed on cement platforms, concrete blocks, brick and metal racks. The floor must slope to a drain pipe leading outside to a catch basin not connected to the sewer.

Empty barrels or drums that have contained flammable liquids must be stored for re-use with the plugs in place to confine all flammable vapours. (Occupational Health and Safety Act General Regulations EC180/87, 43.17 – 43.18, 43.20)

TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS (TDG)

Employees who ship and receive dangerous goods must have TDG training and must carry their TDG training certificate at all times. (Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations, 6.8)
