DEFINITIONS

Contractor

Contractor means the person contracting for work to be carried out.

 

Self-employed person

Self-employed person means a person carrying out an occupation on his or her own behalf. (Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1)

 

DIVISION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

A contractor must take all precautions reasonable under the circumstances to protect the health and safety of persons in the workplace. A contractor is also responsible to ensure that activities of employers and self-employed persons are coordinated, and that information necessary for the health and safety of persons at the workplace is communicated between employers and self-employed persons. (Occupational Health and Safety Act, 14)

 

Every self-employed person must take every reasonable precaution in the circumstance to protect his or her own safety and that of other persons who may be affected by the self-employed person’s work. (Occupational Health and Safety Act, 18)
