ASBESTOS

 

Asbestos is considered to be a confirmed human carcinogen, meaning that it has the ability to cause cancer in humans. Older buildings may contain asbestos. It was used in light ballasts, insulation and in some floor tiles. If your facility contains asbestos, you must comply with the regulations for asbestos.

EXPOSURE LIMITS

The employer must ensure that a worker’s exposure to a substance does not exceed the exposure limits listed in Schedule I, Part 1. The 8-hour exposure limit for asbestos is 0.2 to 1 fibres per cubic centimetre (f/cm3), depending on type. The 15-minute exposure limit for asbestos is 1 to 5 fibres per cubic centimetre (f/cm3), depending on type. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, Schedule I, Part 1)

 

REQUIREMENTS

Asbestos fibres must not be recirculated in the ventilation system in a concentration higher than 0.1 fibres per cubic centimetre. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, Schedule I, Part 1)
