· TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS (TDG)
Containers, piping and other apparatus must be kept in good working order. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 72)
Substances that may cause a fire or explosion, or discharge flammable or toxic gases must be stored separately or isolated so they cannot mix. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 72)
Flammable and combustible substances must be stored away from areas with a high fire hazard, and away from combustive substances and oxidizing agents. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 81)
Toxic substances must be stored away from high fire hazards, combustive substances and powerful oxidizers, in cool, well- ventilated areas. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 92)
Corrosives must be stored away from high fire hazards, away from combustive and power oxidizing agents, and protected from direct sun, in a cool, well-ventilated area. Containers for corrosives shall be kept closed, be identified, and be handled with care. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 96-97)
An emergency
eyewash or shower is required when a corrosive or other substance is likely to
cause rapid, serious, or irreversible damage to the eyes or skin, or when a
toxic substance is likely to be rapidly absorbed by the skin or eyes to cause
serious irritation.
Showers and eyewashes must be clearly identified and accessible. They must be located within immediate vicinity of the workers and supplied with warm water. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 75-76)
Compressed gas cylinders must be fastened upright or held in a cart when in use. When not in use, cylinders must be secured upright with the valve facing upwards and have a protective valve cap. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. 885-2001, 77)
The concentration
of flammable vapours must be less than 25 percent of the lower explosive limit
(LEL) in any part of a building that is not an enclosed area.
In areas where the
concentration is greater than 25 percent of the LEL, there must be no ignition
sources.
Smoking is
prohibited and equipment must be grounded where there may be flammable vapours.
A ventilation system installed to remove flammable vapours must be made of non-combustible substances, the rotating parts must not produce a spark, the metallic components must be grounded, and must have air-tight exhaust conduits vented directly outdoors built to resist explosions. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 49-55)
The storage, handling and use of flammable liquids and combustibles must be in accordance with NFPA-1996 Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-01, 82)
