EMERGENCY RESPONSE

 

Planning for emergencies is key to minimizing injuries to employees and property loss. The employer must first determine what possible emergencies could occur, and then develop plans to address each type of emergency.

EVACUATION PLAN

A workplace must develop and implement an emergency evacuation plan. Rescue and evacuation drills must be held at least once a year. The drills must be adapted to the risks and activities found in the workplace. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 34)

 

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

Portable extinguishers must be located in all buildings, chosen according to NFPA-10 Portable Fire Extinguishers. Extinguishers must be approved by ULC, provide appropriate protection, be filled after use, and be tagged with the name of the inspector and date of inspection. Additional extinguishers must be located where there is a local fire risk. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 36)

 

FIRE ALARM

A new low-hazard industrial building (this includes photo processors and picture framers) with more than 500 employees must have a fire alarm system installed. (Industrial and Commercial Establishments Regulation 1981, 4.6.2)

 

A building that has an occupant load greater than 100 persons and that does not have an automatic fire alarm system or an extinguishing system must have a manual fire alarm system. The manual fire alarm boxes must be installed so that a box is located within 7.5 metres of an exit and so that it is not necessary to travel more than 60 metres to reach a box. (Industrial and Commercial Establishments Regulation 1981, 4.6.6)

 

The fire alarm, detection system and emergency lighting shall always be in good working order. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 38)
