PROVISION OF PPE AND TRAINING

The employer must provide PPE free of charge and ensure that the worker is instructed in its use. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 338)

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Worker

The worker must wear or use PPE when required by regulation. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 339)

 

EYE PROTECTION

Eye protection must be worn when exposed to injury of the eyes from particles or objects, dangerous substances or radiation. Eye protectors must comply with CSA Z94.3-92 Industrial Eye and Face Protectors. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 343)

 

BODY/SKIN PROTECTION

Skin protection must be worn when exposed to burning, sharp, infectious, or dangerous substances. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-2001, 345)

 

FOOT PROTECTION

Foot protection must be worn when exposed to injury of the foot by perforation, electric shock, accumulation of electrostatic charge, by falling objects, molten material, hot substances, corrosive substances, or other dangerous tasks. Foot protectors must comply with CSA Z195-M92 Safety Footwear. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 885-01, 344)

 

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

Where the concentration of oxygen is less than 19.5 percent or the concentration of contaminants is greater than exposure limits, respiratory protection must be provided free of charge. The employer must ensure the worker uses the respirator.

 

Respiratory protection must be selected, adjusted, used, and cared for as per CSA Z94.4-93 Selection, Use and Care of Respirators. The employer must develop and implement a respiratory protection program in accordance with the CSA standard.

 

Respiratory protection must be designed to protect the worker from the danger he or she is exposed to, be kept in good working order, be inspected by the worker before each use, be inspected by the employer monthly and when a worker reports a defect, disinfected before use by other worker, and stored in clean place.

 

The employer must explain the principles of operation and use of equipment to workers, and must ensure its use is understood. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation. 885-2001, 45-48)
