Asbestos is
considered to be a confirmed human carcinogen, meaning that it has the ability
to cause cancer in humans. Older buildings may contain asbestos. It was used in
light ballasts, insulation and in some floor tiles. If your facility contains
asbestos, you must comply with the regulations for asbestos.

If there is asbestos present in the workplace that may generate airborne dust to which workers may be exposed, there are a number of requirements that must be met. A competent person must identify all asbestos-containing materials and keep a written record. An annual inspection must be made of the identified materials to ensure that they are not releasing asbestos dust. Signs detailing the health hazards of asbestos must be conspicuously posted near all identified asbestos-containing materials. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 1996, 334)
