PROVISION OF PPE

When PPE is required, the employer must supply it at no cost and ensure it is worn. The employer must ensure that PPE is available to workers, it is stored correctly, and that workers are trained in its use.

The worker must use the PPE and take reasonable steps to prevent damage to it. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1996, 87)

TRAINING

Employers must ensure that workers are trained in the use, limits and maintenance of any PPE they are required to use. (Occupational Health and Safety 1996, 87)

FACE / EYE PROTECTION

Face or eye protection must be worn when there is a risk of irritation or injury to the face or eyes due to flying objects or splashes. Eye protection must be approved. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1996, 93)

BODY / SKIN PROTECTION

Body or skin protection must be worn when there is a risk of injury to the skin. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1996, 97)

Hand and arm protection must be provided and used when exposed to chemicals. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1996, 97)

FOOT PROTECTION

The worker must use footwear appropriate to the risks of the workplace. Where there is a risk of a falling object, the worker must wear protective footwear. Where there is a risk from corrosive or toxic substances, the worker must wear approved footwear. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1996, 96)

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

When a worker is exposed to a harmful or offensive contaminant, the employer must provide respiratory protection that fits and seals. The employer must ensure that it is cleaned and maintained, and stored properly.

The employer must ensure that the worker is trained in the use and care of the respirator by a competent person, and the worker demonstrates proper use and understanding of the training. The training must include a practical session. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1996, 88)

The employer must ensure that a competent person inspects the respirator monthly. The date and name of the inspector must be recorded and displayed at the storage location.

A competent person must correct any defects in the respirator. (Occupational Health and Safety Regulation 1996, 89)
