DEFINITION

An employer is a person who employs one or more workers or who contracts for the services of one or more workers, and includes a contractor or sub-contractor. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1986, 1)

 

DIVISION OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Where there is an overlapping of the work areas of two or more employers, the principal contractor, or if there is no principal contractor, the owner of the project must establish and ensure the continuing function of a management group to coordinate the accident prevention activities of the several employers. Each employer must be represented and must cooperate with the management group. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1986, 5)
