HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM

A health and safety program is required in workplaces classified as A or B hazard that have more than 20 workers. (Photo processors and picture framers are classified as C hazard.) (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 12)

 

JOINT HEALTH AND SAFETY COMMITTEE (JHSC)

A JHSC is required in workplaces that have more than 20 workers. The committee meets at least monthly. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 12)

 

Members

A JHSC must have at least four members but no more than 12, of which at least half must be workers. The committee must have both a worker and a management co-chair. The worker representatives must select one member to be a health and safety representative. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 12)

 

Health and safety representative

The health and safety representative may perform a physical inspection of the workplace monthly, observe workplace testing, and accompany a safety officer during an accident investigation. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 12)

 

Duties

The duties and function of the committee includes the following: to identify situations that may be a hazard to workers, investigate and deal with complaints, develop programs, measures and procedures for the improvement of health and safety, recommend improvements to health and safety, ensure accidents are investigated and review reports, and inquire into matters pertaining to health and safety. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 12)

 

Meetings

Committee members are entitled to be paid for time spent preparing for and attending monthly meetings, and other duties. The committee must prepare minutes of each meeting. The employer must post minutes of the most recent meeting. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 14)

 

Education

Each co-chair must be trained in the duties and responsibilities of a committee member. (Occupational Health and Safety Act 1983, 13.1)
