MACHINE OPERATION

Only people who are authorized may operate machinery and equipment. Authorized employees must be adequately instructed and trained, and able to demonstrate an ability to operate the machinery or equipment safely.

Before any machinery or equipment is started, the operator must ensure that all affected areas are inspected, all safeguards and controls are in place and functioning, and the operation of the equipment or machinery will not cause undue risk of injury to workers in the area. (General Safety Regulations 1986/164, 4)

Where there is a danger of contact with moving parts of machinery or electrically energized equipment, the clothing of workers must fit closely about the body, dangling neckwear, bracelets, wristwatches, rings or similar articles must not be worn, and hair must confined or worn at a length that prevents it being snagged or caught. (General Safety Regulations 1986/164, 6)

ELECTRICAL TOOLS

A worker must disconnect a power tool from its source in a manner that prevents inadvertent reconnection before removing or changing an attachment. (General Safety Regulations 1986/164, 41)

LOCKOUT

Parts of a machine, transmission machinery, or device may only be cleaned, oiled, adjusted, repaired or have maintenance work performed on them only when motion that may endanger a worker has stopped and any part that has stopped but may subsequently move and endanger a worker has been blocked to prevent its motion. (General Safety Regulations 1986/164, 6)
